There are many common weight loss
myths that people live by when it comes to their health. It is difficult at
times to separate the weight loss myths and fact from what is true. Many sound
true while others are just laughable. I once read somewhere that if you drink
water at night that you are going to gain weight or that if you scratch your
head too often you are going to lose your hair....
This claim is actually laughable.
Drastic diets, otherwise known as crash diets, will really let you attain quick
weight loss. Since you are almost not taking anything aside from, let's say
water, you'll surely get your results fast. However, be wary, because these
kinds of diets only work for a very short time. Given that you can never prolong
your crash diet throughout your entire life, needless to say, you might end up
getting ill if you even try. There's a very big chance that your lost weight
will quickly return later on. Furthermore, most crash diets end up with a
weight bonus. This means you might end up being heavier compared to when your
first started dieting. This is because once you resume to your normal diet,
your body may have a hard time adjusting to such quick changes.
Myth 2: Cut the carbohydrates
My defense of carbohydrates is
continual! Why are they essential? Carbohydrates serve crucial functions in the
human body. Among other things, they are your body's principal source of energy
and the only source of energy for many important cells such as neurons and red
blood cells. This being said, an over consumption of carbohydrates transforms
itself into fat, which is why, on average, an adult's plate should consist of
only 20% whole grains and or starchy vegetables, the rest being vegetables,
fruits, protein and fat.
Most important of all is the type of
carbohydrates you choose. The reasons this food group has a bad reputation is
that chosen incorrectly they wreak havoc on your blood sugar and cause you to
crave more food rather than fill you up and provide you with the nutrients and
long-lasting energy you need.
Which ones are best? Choose complex
carbohydrates like whole grains instead of 'white' or refined carbohydrates
(white rice, white bread, white pasta...).
Myth3: Fat Loss
Skipping meals is a good way to lose
weight
Weight Loss Fact: There are numerous
studies that show that people who skip breakfast and eat fewer times during the
day tend to be a lot heavier than who have a healthy nutritional breakfast and
then eat 4-6 small meals during the day. The reason to this might be the fact
that they get hungrier later on in the day, and might have a tendency to over
eat during other meals of the day.
Myth 4: You have a high chance of
permanent weight loss success on any of the popular diet programs: Weight
Watchers, Jenny Craig, LA Weight Loss, South Beach Diet, Edits, Curves, Nutritionist, etc.
You have a chance of losing weight
but it's pretty low. You need to address all of the many factors that can
prevent you from losing weight in a holistic manner that involves the mind,
body and spirit.
Myth 6 "Pasta and bread make you
fat"
The Truth: Although bread and pasta
are high in carbohydrates, it is only over eating these types of foods which
can make us gain weight. Because of this, many people avoid high carb foods
when on a diet - you can however just limit your intake instead. Also, rather
than having white bread or pasta, switch to whole grains. You will also find
that the foods you eat with these products can also be culprits when it comes
to weight gain - don't blame the pasta and bread - it could well be the creamy
pasta sauce that boosted your calories or the sugary jam on your toast. Try low
fat spreads and tomato pasta sauce instead!
My parents are overweight, I guess I am
doomed. While research does show that genetic relatives tend to have a similar
body weight that does not seal your fate. There are a lot of other factors that
are still in your control. Those with a family history of obesity may be more
likely to gain weight than those with a slimmer family tree, but that does not
mean a healthier diet and proper exercise are less effective. No matter what,
the most important factors affecting your weight are how many calories you take
in and how much physical activity you get. So hang in there, do not use
genetics as an excuse to give up
