Weight Loss Tips - And Diet is NOT One of Them

There are all kinds of weight loss tips I could give you. You see them pop up in articles and on the evening news all the time. They cover a wide range. Some are sensible, some are silly, and some just seem a little strange. However, most of them have one thing in common. They HELP you lose weight, but in only a few cases will they ever actually serve as THE MAJOR CAUSE of weight loss.
In other words, while following most weight loss tips might help you LOSE A FEW POUNDS, and maybe that's all you need or want to lose, healthy permanent weight loss is usually achieved by implementing two lifestyle changes.

You see, weight loss tips such as eating off smaller plates or drinking a glass of water before meals may help you at the moment they are implemented, but they are only effective if implemented regularly, their effects are not permanent, and, for most people, their individual results are minimal at best. The same can be said of most weight loss supplements and diet pills as well.
Whatever is accomplished at the moment is generally minimal and will be pretty much undone very rapidly after you quit taking the pill or using the new size plates...or order a meal in a restaurant.
Nor will all the tips, pills, potions and/or magic incantations address the root causes of being overweight. We do not become overweight because we eat off of big plates any more than we become overweight because we don't use Hoodia Gordonii, or some other weight loss supplement regularly.

We, as individuals and as a society, become overweight because we choose, consciously or not, to eat more of the wrong foods than we should and to lead sedentary lives.
I am not blaming the individual members of our society any more than I would blame a member of any other society for acting in a given manner because that's all they know. However, we do know more, or should know more, about how to stay healthy and manage our weight.

Even on the labels of weight loss products or within the articles which provide a laundry list of weight loss tips, two instructions, tips, data points...whatever...keep cropping up: Exercise and proper nutrition.

This piece of knowledge has become so self-evident and accepted that even many proponents of particular diets have given up touting their formulas as being able to produce maximum results without exercise and proper nutrition choices. Very view will claim that to lose weight in a healthy permanent manner you can follow the guidelines of their particular diet all the remaining days of your life.
Diets simply do not work! Oh, you may lose a few pounds and be able to slip into the next smaller dress, or drop a few inches before your next high school reunion, but the only two diet tips that created permanent healthy weight loss, and a healthier post weight loss condition, are to get more exercise and to eat sensibly.

I am not going to cover the negative effects of diets here due to space limitations and because I have written about them in depth so many other times. However, for those who may not be aware,
1. You are not going to stay on a diet, and you know this.
2. Even if the diet is effective, you will not want to eat that way for the rest of your life.
3. Once you fall off the diet wagon, you will gain back the weight you lost...and often more.
4. Diets can actually teach your body to get by on fewer calories, making it easier to gain weight.
5. Diets, which reduce the intake of nutrition, can reduce your intake of necessary nutrients as well.
No, when it comes to handing out diet tips, I usually stick with the two main ones...exercise and nutrition.
You don't have to join a gym or become a dietitian. Simply make the choice to get up and move around more and to pay more attention to what you eat as you "exercise" mature judgment and self-control.

By the way, nobody has said that you can NEVER eat ice cream or pizza again. Just eat it in reasonable sized portions and make sure that the bulk of your food intake...your diet...is mainly comprised of the types of food you should be eating.

There's been a lot of buzz about "The Secret" and "The Law of Attraction" over the last couple of years. Once you boil it all down, the secret to both is to take charge of your life and quit letting things just happen to you. If you eat anything put before you without making a conscious choice and if you "choose" NOT to exercise, you stand a greater chance of not being able to lose, or at least control, your weight and you will probably age more rapidly than necessary and with worse consequences than if you choose now to take back your life and, as Spock would say, "Live long and prosper".
